About GBCB

GBCB students Brittany Boribong and Amogh Jalihal representing GBCB at the Virginia Tech Graduate School Fair in Fall 2017

The Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Genetics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology (GBCB) first enrolled students in Fall Semester 2002. Since that time, the program has awarded the PhD degree to 60+ students. Currently, 30 students are enrolled in the program.During this brief history, two of our students have been
named Outstanding Graduate Student in interdisciplinary programs, one has been named Graduate Woman of the Year, and one has received recognition for Best Dissertation in the science category.

The GBCB program offers only a PhD degree.  The program includes four primary tracks: life sciences, computer science, mathematics, and statistics. Students select a primary track and two secondary tracks. They complete advanced coursework in the primary track and “first-level” graduate courses (at least 12 credit hours) in the secondary tracks. All students take a bioethics course and a capstone problem-solving course.
